Nalini Malani: In Search of Vanished Blood, ICA/Boston, June 29–October 16, 2016

Nalini Malani has forged a singular artistic practice through her immersive “video/shadow plays.” Titled after Pakistani poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz, In Search of Vanished Blood (2012) takes inspiration from Christa Wolf’s Cassandra (1984) and addresses themes Malani has long been dedicated to such as the conditions of women particularly in India, displacement, disenfranchisement, mythology, geopolitics, while coalescing a range of cultural traditions. The work includes six videos projected around the room and five clear Mylar cylinders with hand-painted imagery suspended from the ceiling that rotate to create a mesmeric and encompassing experience.
