Dana Schutz, ICA/Boston, July 26–November 26, 2017

Dana Schutz’s paintings coalesce abstraction and figuration, the outrageous and quotidian, as well as disorder and unfolding narratives. This exhibition featured her recent works of figures contending with or working against the constraints of their environments.

This exhibition opened on the heels of the 2017 Whitney Biennial that included Schutz’s painting Open Casket, which engendered potent debate around race and representation within institutional spaces. Before and during the show’s run, we invited our staff and our publics to have robust conversations around the ensuing controversy and broader issues related to institutional responsibility.
